"Sidney was amazing. I sent him a list of things I'd like to see during my visit to Nairobi and he personally crafted an itinerary that not just hit all the spots I wanted to go to, but that also felt leisurely and relaxed. He also took care of all the transportation for the week I was there. I really couldn't have asked for a better trip! I highly recommend if you're looking for a bespoke itinerary!"

Every safari I organise starts with understanding the people taking it. Give me the basics and I will personally have a look at what could work for you.
Tell me about your tripIndividually planned Kenya journeys
Planned personally. Run locally.
Many Kenya trips pass through several hands. The company planning your safari and the team running it on the ground are often not the same. With us, there is no anonymous handover. We plan your journey ourselves and work with a small circle of trusted partners and drivers in Kenya. We know the routes because we've driven them, the camps because we've stayed in them, and the person planning your journey remains your contact while you're travelling.

The person behind Fernweh Safaris

"Sidney from Fernweh Safari organized a fantastic trip for us. We stayed at a charming lodge and were provided with great cars and drivers. What's great about Sidney is his commitment and reliability. On top of that, he's a really nice guy."
"This was the perfect safari experience for our family! Our guide was very knowledgable and shared lots of interesting facts about the animals! We saw lots of zebras, rhinos, giraffe up close as well as a wide variety of other animals. We have 2 small children (age 2 and 5). Our guide went at the perfect pace for them, giving them lots of time to see and appreciate the animals. Thank you!"
Where we take you
There is more than one way to "safari"
From Kenya’s great safari classics to remote landscapes, rare wildlife and the Indian Ocean coast. Explore the journeys we know and love.

The Icons
Kenya's great safari classics
Some places are famous for a reason. The Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo offer the landscapes, wildlife and experiences that define a journey through Kenya. We know how to experience the classics without making them feel like a standard package.

The Road Less Travelled
Beyond the classic safari circuit
Some of our favourite parts of Kenya are the ones many visitors never reach. From Laikipia and its remarkable conservancies to Meru and the forests around Mount Kenya, this is a quieter, wilder side of the country, and, in our opinion, home to some of its greatest gems.

The Coast
Safari ends. Barefoot begins.
Kenya doesn't stop at the savannah. Finish your journey on the Indian Ocean, from the white sands of Diani to the laid-back Swahili coast around Watamu.

Why travel with us
A few things we do differently
Fernweh is deliberately small. We know the journeys we sell, work with people we trust, and don't try to squeeze everything into one itinerary. A few things matter to us more than others.
We actually know the places
Routes are driven, camps are visited and recommendations change when our opinion does. A beautiful website isn't enough to make the list.
Less can be a much better safari
Kenya is big. Adding another park can mean spending half the day getting there. We'd rather slow a journey down than add stops just to make the itinerary look impressive.
A small circle of people we trust
We work with a handful of guides and long-standing partners, not whoever happens to be available. Who you travel with matters.
Not every upgrade is worth it
Sometimes the more expensive camp is genuinely better. Sometimes it isn't. We'll tell you where we think the money is worth spending, and where it isn't.
The obvious route isn't always the best one
The Mara and Amboseli are famous for good reason. But sometimes a quieter conservancy, an extra night somewhere, or a completely different part of Kenya makes more sense.
Someone still picks up the phone
The trip doesn't disappear into an operations department once you've paid. If something changes while you're in Kenya, you can reach someone who actually knows your journey.
Travel styles
What kind of Kenya are you looking for?
These aren't packages. Think of them as starting points. We shape the rest around you.

Good to know
The questions you should be asking a Kenyan tour operator
We would rather answer them before you ask.
Licensed local operator
A registered Kenyan tour operator with the required licences and insurance cover, not an anonymous booking site.
Written confirmations
Every booking, every change and every price is confirmed in writing. Nothing lives only in a phone call.
Partners we know personally
Guides, drivers, camps and lodges we visit ourselves. No blind bookings.
Safety first
Well maintained vehicles, experienced drivers, realistic driving times and clear emergency procedures.
Fair local employment
Our team and partners are paid fairly and directly. Your money largely stays in Kenya.
English and German support
Questions, changes and problems can always be explained in your own language.
Responsible travel
Responsibly considered, not just well described
Which camp we book matters. We look at water and energy use, plastics and waste, wildlife practices, local employment and the conservation or community work a property is actually involved in. We also favour credible eco certification, such as the Eco rating scheme from Ecotourism Kenya, as one signal among several.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kenya safe for travellers?
The safari regions and the coast we work in are safe and visited by travellers year round. We plan routes conservatively, use experienced drivers, avoid night driving on long stretches and stay in constant contact with our partners on the ground. If a region is not advisable at a given time, we say so and suggest an alternative.
What does a journey actually cost?
An individually planned Kenya journey usually starts at around 200 to 250 EUR per person per day for mid range camps, and rises with the level of accommodation and privacy you choose. Prices also depend on the season. In the high season from July to September, the safari portion can reach 350 to 400 EUR per person per day, partly because of higher park fees. The Maasai Mara alone currently charges 200 USD per person per day. We always show what is included, such as accommodation, park fees, vehicle, guide and meals, and what is not, such as international flights, visas, tips and drinks.
Which languages do you work in?
Planning, documents, consultation and support happen in English or German, whichever you prefer. On the ground your guide will normally speak English, and German speaking guides can be arranged on request.
When is the best time to travel?
July to October brings dry conditions and the great migration in the Maasai Mara. January to March is warm, green and excellent for wildlife with fewer visitors. April, May and November are the rainy months. They are cheaper and beautifully green, but some routes are restricted. We will tell you honestly what to expect in your chosen month.
